Branding is about how a business looks.
The logo.
The colours.
The website.
The social media.
But after my conversation with T. Christian Helms, founder and creative director of Helms Workshop, one thing became very clear:
Your brand is much bigger than your visual identity.
Christian has spent more than 15 years working in branding, with companies ranging from Jack Daniel’s and Hershey to smaller founder-led businesses.
He explained that a brand is the collection of thoughts, feelings, emotions and experiences people have with your company or product.
And that distinction matters.
Your Brand Isn’t Your Logo
A logo can represent your brand.
But it can’t create the entire relationship someone has with your business.
The strongest brands get beyond simply explaining the functional benefits of what they sell.
They create emotional and social meaning.
They make people feel something.
This is particularly important for coaches, consultants and experts because often you are the face of the brand.
People aren’t only evaluating your service.
They’re evaluating your ideas, values, personality and whether they trust you.
Stop Trying to Look Like Everyone Else
One of the traps Christian highlighted is trying so hard to prove you belong in your industry that you end up looking and sounding exactly like everybody else.
You use the same words.
Make the same claims.
Follow the same patterns.
Suddenly, your potential customer is looking at a group of businesses that seem interchangeable.
What are they left comparing?
Price.
Instead, Christian encourages businesses to uncover what genuinely makes them different.
Sometimes the answer is sitting right in front of you.
He shared the story of a family-run brewery whose founders were self-conscious because they didn’t have an impressive brewing lineage.
But the fact that they were a family coming together around a shared passion was exactly what made their story interesting.
Nobody else could own it.
Authenticity Can’t Be Manufactured
We also talked about authenticity.
It’s a word that gets thrown around constantly online.
Can you manufacture authenticity?
Christian’s answer was clear: you can try, but people tend to pick up on it.
What you can do is amplify what’s genuinely there.
That could mean your humour.
Your directness.
Your perspective.
Your values.
Your experiences.
The goal isn’t to create an impressive character and perform it online.
It’s to understand who you are and communicate that more clearly.
Why AI Makes Human Connection More Valuable
This becomes even more important as AI gets better.
AI can already help us produce polished content, visuals, websites and marketing.
I use AI myself.
But I don’t believe the answer is to hide from it.
The opportunity is to understand where humans still have an advantage.
Your lived experience.
Your stories.
Your perspective.
And genuine conversations.
That’s one reason I’m such an advocate of podcasting.
You can manufacture a highly polished social media post.
It’s much harder to manufacture who you are throughout a long-form conversation.
Listeners hear how you think.
They discover what matters to you.
They decide whether you’re for them.
Recognized, Remembered and Trusted
During our conversation I described three stages:
Recognized. Remembered. Trusted.
Visibility can make you recognized.
But recognition isn’t the same as being remembered.
And being remembered isn’t automatically the same as being trusted.
Christian explained that to become memorable, you need to give people something meaningful.
Trust goes deeper still.
It comes from showing up consistently and demonstrating what you stand for.
That’s where branding and podcasting come together beautifully.
The goal isn’t to become famous to everybody.
It’s to become meaningful to the right people.
