Have you ever explained your business perfectly, only to hear someone say, “I’ll think about it”?

If so, you probably don’t have a communication problem.

You have a storytelling problem.

That was one of the biggest takeaways from my recent conversation with Dr. Danny Brassell on Podcast Profits Unleashed.

Danny has spoken to thousands of audiences across the globe and has helped entrepreneurs, executives and organisations become better communicators through intentional storytelling. What struck me most wasn’t just his experience—it was how simple he makes the process.

One statement stayed with me throughout the interview:

People don’t buy because they understand what you do. They buy because they finally feel understood.

Think about that for a moment.

As business owners, we spend so much time trying to explain our services. We polish our offers, refine our websites and perfect our elevator pitch.

Yet people rarely make decisions based purely on information.

They make decisions emotionally.

Stories help people recognise themselves inside your message.

That’s when trust begins.

Good Stories Have a Purpose

Danny explained the difference between good speakers and great speakers beautifully.

Good speakers tell stories.

Great speakers tell stories with intention.

Every story should move your audience closer to the action you want them to take.

Whether that’s booking a discovery call, joining your programme or simply remembering your message, your story should serve a purpose.

That’s a very different approach from simply entertaining people.

Create Your Own Story Bank

One exercise I absolutely loved was Danny’s advice to build a Story Bank.

Spend an hour writing down every memorable moment you can think of.

Don’t write the entire story.

Simply write the trigger.

The day you lost your keys.

Your first client.

An embarrassing presentation.

A conversation that changed your life.

Once you’ve collected these stories, ask yourself one question:

“What is this story really about?”

Suddenly, you’ll have dozens—if not hundreds—of stories ready to use in presentations, podcast interviews and sales conversations.

Your Failures Build More Trust Than Your Successes

Another refreshing perspective Danny shared was to stop leading with success.

People can’t always relate to your achievements.

They can relate to your struggles.

Everyone has experienced setbacks.

Everyone has failed.

Sharing those moments creates authenticity without needing to relive the most painful experiences of your life.

Your audience doesn’t need perfection.

They need connection.

Frameworks Beat Scripts

One reason many people avoid speaking opportunities is because they think they have to memorise every word.

Danny believes the opposite.

Master a framework.

Know your stories.

Understand where each story fits.

Then allow the conversation to unfold naturally.

That’s exactly why podcast guesting is such a valuable skill. Every interview helps you refine your message while remaining authentic.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been wondering how to attract more clients without sounding salesy, storytelling may be the missing piece.

The clearer your stories become, the clearer your message becomes.

And as Danny reminded us throughout this conversation:

Clarity converts.
