There’s something I see constantly in podcast guesting.
“I’ve got five podcasts booked this month.”
“I’m doing 50 podcasts this year.”
“I finally got onto a massive show.”
Great.
But then what?
Because getting booked on a podcast is not a business strategy. It’s an appointment in your calendar.
The strategy begins when you decide what you’re going to do with that opportunity.
Podcast Guesting Is About People
We’ve become obsessed with visibility.
Downloads. Followers. Audience size. Backlinks.
But podcasting gives you access to something much more valuable:
People.
And sometimes the person who matters most isn’t listening to the episode.
They’re sitting across from you.
The host.
Think about two podcasts.
Podcast A has 50,000 listeners, but most have no need for what you sell.
Podcast B has 500 listeners who fit your ideal audience. The host serves similar people, their expertise complements yours, and there could be opportunities to collaborate.
Which conversation has more strategic potential?
That’s why audience size should never be your only measure.
Research the Host, Not Just the Podcast
Before pitching, get curious.
Listen to an episode.
Look at the host’s business.
What are they talking about?
What are they building?
What matters to them?
You’re not searching for a fake connection you can drop into a pitch.
You’re deciding whether this is someone you genuinely want to talk to.
That changes the pitch too.
Instead of sending a biography full of awards and qualifications, answer the question the host actually cares about:
Why should we have this conversation?
What does their audience get from it?
What interesting perspective can you bring?
Your experience supports the pitch.
It shouldn’t be the pitch.
Turn Up Curious
Once you’re booked, don’t spend the interview waiting for your next chance to say something impressive.
Listen.
React.
Ask questions.
If the host says something interesting, explore it.
Great podcast interviews don’t feel like:
Question. Answer. Question. Answer.
They feel like two people having a fascinating conversation that everyone else happens to be listening to.
And hosts remember how that conversation felt.
What Happens After the Podcast?
This is where enormous opportunities get lost.
You spend an hour talking.
You discover mutual interests.
You exchange ideas.
Then you say, “Thanks for having me,” close Zoom and never speak again.
Imagine behaving like that at a networking event.
It makes no sense.
Send the thank-you.
Share the episode when it comes out.
Talk about the host, not simply the fact that you’ve appeared on another podcast.
Then stay connected.
No ridiculous automated sequence.
Just behave like a human being.
If something reminds you of the conversation, send it.
If you know somebody they should meet, introduce them.
If you see an opportunity that fits them, share it.
Become useful.
Relationships Compound
Not every host needs to become a client.
One may refer someone.
Another may invite you to speak.
Another may introduce you to a collaborator.
Another might invite you onto a different show.
And another may simply become someone valuable to know.
You cannot measure that by checking podcast downloads seven days after an interview.
Six months later, an introduction might happen.
Twelve months later, you might collaborate.
Relationships compound.
That’s why the old model of podcast guesting—get booked, record, promote, repeat—is incomplete.
The more strategic model is:
Identify the person.
Create the connection.
Have the conversation.
Continue the relationship.
Start With 10 People
If you’re new to podcast guesting, don’t begin with a target of 50 bookings.
Identify 10 people you would genuinely love to speak with.
People whose work you respect.
People who serve similar audiences.
People whose expertise complements yours.
Then find their podcasts.
Because sometimes the podcast isn’t the opportunity.
It’s the introduction that creates the opportunity.
